Hostage release: contradictions, impossibilities and paradox

Tal Hartuv - 17 January 2025

Ever since reports broke out a few days ago of a hostage deal very likely to be signed, Israelis have occupied themselves with nothing else but this news. Yet this news of getting back our hostages is fraught with uncertainties. No one, including Israel, Hamas, the US or the likes of the Red Cross, seems to know how many hostages are still alive, or even where they all are.

Behind this incredibly welcome news of the return of our people which no Israeli will begrudge, is the high future cost of the deal. Aside from relinquishing strategic territorial gains, Israel will also release 1000’s of terrorists in jail, who have maimed and murdered. Their release is a two-edged sword. Although it brings back our loved ones from hell, it also gives these terrorists an opportunity to murder in the future. The military and strategic rights and wrongs of the deal are even overshadowed by the emotions incurred, due to winning and losing at the same time.

But contradictions, impossibilities and paradox have been evident in Jewish history right back to our forefathers. So why should 2025 be any different?
