Update from northern Israel – U.S. pressure for ceasefire after deadly rocket attacks

Tal Hartuv - 31 October 2024

With only five days to go to the American elections, the pressure from the United States administration upon Israel for an immediate ceasefire both in Lebanon and Gaza stung hard today, when a relentless barrage of rockets in the north killed 7 people, the highest death toll in months.

In Metula, the most northern town in Israel where one in three houses are already destroyed, a rocket fell in a orchard killing four agricultural laborers from Thailand and also the local Omer Weinstein, aged 47, a native of Metula.

Hours later, sirens sounded in the north again sending thousands into the safe rooms. Although the Iron Dome defense system is successful in bringing down the majority of missiles, it is not 100% successful in intercepting every projectile. Such was the case in a Haifa suburb when a man and a woman failed to make it to the safe room in time and were killed on the spot.

Heads of regional councils in the north, spoke out fiercely against the USA pressure to come to a ceasefire, not just because of todays high death toll but because Hezbollah still has tens of thousands of missiles which the IDF have not had enough time in Lebanon to destroy.

Just minutes after the attacks, sonic booms were heard in the north, as Israeli Air Force jets passed over on their way to Lebanon, to bomb villages on Israel’s border, but not before Israel called upon civilians to leave the area, even advising them which routes to use.
