Grateful, despite everything

12 December 2024

In just a few months, the war in Ukraine will mark its third year. Throughout this tumultuous period, our dedicated team has persevered under challenging circumstances to help Jews leave for Israel. Koen Carlier shares his reflections on the past year.

How would you describe the year for you and your team?

‘It has been a difficult and gruelling year with few moments of joy but many rewarding ones,’ Koen says. On Tuesday 19 November, Ukraine observed a somber milestone: 1,000 days of war. ‘You might wonder what there is to commemorate. Is it the immense suffering caused by the war? The hundreds of thousands of young Ukrainian soldiers who lost their lives? The tens of thousands of innocent civilians killed? The severely injured? The harsh winter conditions, or the lack of heating and electricity in vast areas near the frontlines? Such devastation can weigh heavily on the heart.’

Yet, amidst the sorrow, there is gratitude. ‘We are thankful to continue evacuating the elderly, the vulnerable, and young mothers with babies—helping them on their way to Israel. Even though Israel faces its own challenges, every new immigrant is warmly welcomed. The advice we share with each family is rooted in the Bible, in Isaiah 43:5: “Do not fear, for I am with you.” That promise, that can be found 365 times in the Bible, provides daily encouragement.’

Can you share some of the highlights of last year?

‘There were many remarkable events,’ Koen recalls, ‘and we shared many of these through our newspaper and website. One particularly touching memory involved three groups of teenagers, aged 14 to 16, who traveled from all over Ukraine to Moldova in September and November to board flights to Israel to continue their studies there. Their anxious faces at the moment of farewell were unforgettable. What if…? But alongside those worries, we also saw the radiant smile of 14-year-old Adel as she set off for the land of her ancestors, and the tearful but hopeful goodbye of her mother Chaya from Mariupol. Such moments were deeply moving and emotional.’

What keeps you inspired to continue the work in Ukraine amidst great uncertainty and difficult circumstances?

‘We are not looking too far ahead,’ Koen says. ‘The war situation remains dire, and I believe Russia will intensify efforts to plunge Ukraine into darkness and cold this winter through relentless missile and drone attacks on the infrastructure that is already fragile.’

Despite this, the mission to provide practical assistance to those in need remains unwavering. ‘We are committed to being there for those who need help the most—offering shelter, care, and assistance to those choosing to leave for Israel. The feedback from those we have helped is heartening: “Your care and shelter are exceptional, and the drivers are so kind—it’s a dream to be helped by you!” Above all, it is the Bible that inspires and motivates us. Knowing we have your prayers sustains us as we carry on this work.’

‘Pass through, pass through the gates! Prepare the way for the people. Build up, build up the highway! Remove the stones. Raise a banner for the nations.’
